Some RVs do require a special license to operate depending on weight and/or brake configuration. Certain Class A, Class C, and Fifth Wheels meet criteria for a non-commercial license to operation legally; we do provide all necessary training to get this license.
Some states offer a Non-Commercial License which is required if the following criteria is met:
* Class A & B motorhomes that have a registered weight over 26,001 pounds and/or has air brakes
* Class A & B motorhome that has a tow vehicle/trailer of over 10,000 pounds or combination of GVWR of RV+trailer = greater than 26,001
* Fifth wheel RVs that have a weight over 26,001 in combination with the vehicle towing the RV (e.g. F250 GVWR 10,000 + RV GVWR 17,000 = 27,000 pounds total capacity)
Even though you rarely hear of RVers getting ticketed for weight, there is more to the equation. If you were to get into an accident, whether your fault or not, the insurance company can deny a claim because you are not properly licensed to operate the vehicle. This means that you may have had a chance to prevent the accident if you were properly educated on driving that vehicle.
