Maybe! If the gross (total) combination weight rating (GCWR) exceeds 26,001 pounds, yes, you will need a CDL. Example: if a truck has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,000 pounds and tows a trailer with a GVWR over 12,000 pounds, this would equal greater 26,001 pounds, thus requiring a CDL to operate in the state of Texas. It does not matter what weight you are actually towing, the law states a CDL is required if the combined vehicle is capable of towing an amount over 26,001 pounds per the GVWR sticker. Click HERE to view the Texas CDL Handbook for more information.
We offer Hazardous Material Endorsement as well as Passenger and School Bus Endorsements. These endorsements can be added at the time of obtaining a Class A or B license or can be added separately after the CDL has already been established.
